Gemini Brookes
Gemini Brookes is an Artist based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
A Fine Art graduate from Winchester School of Art, her influence by the world of style and fashion shines through in her paintings. Her first published commission, illustrating 3 of Coco Chanel's most iconic outfits for 'French Lessons á la Coco'.
Brookes' work takes on a highly visual and decorative focus, owing to her love of the visual and also particularly decorative, pop and street artists, designers and illustrators that she follows. Her favourite artist is Gustav Klimt, renowned for his decorative, sensual paintings of the female body. She wishes to capture the "goldenness" of Klimt's work in her own work, but instead of using gold to flatter her pieces, she uses black and white only to offer a pure and minimalist sparkle.
Using unlikely mediums on the canvas, including insulation spray foam, bitumen and radiator paint to achieve the ultimate texture and high gloss in some of her paintings, Brookes adopts an openly expressive and experimental approach to create wonderful portraits infused with an art-nouveau-meets-street-art feel.
